They are in no way the same core tone.įWIW this guy Rich is responsible for the M13 which IMO is the best thing L6 ever made.

The 75 and up are built on a Sharc (X3) but the modeling is beyond even the X3 at this point. The 15 and 30 are built on tech that is POD 2.0 ish. The Spider IVs from the 75 and up are Sharc based but the modeling is all brand new next level modeling.
#Line 6 pod farm amps series
The answer is from the actual product manager Rich RenkenīTW, nobody has yet answered this question: What existing tech is the Spider IV series based on? POD XT? Pocket Pod? Or is there no current equivalent.? Here's an excerpt of a thread over at TGP. Yes they use the same hardware platform as the X3 but the algos are brand new. The models on the new spiders were newly created specifically for the amp line (believe me I was surprised).

NONE of the other modelers including the axe FX has this undesirable "artifact". It usually means your power amp section is not properly filtered and the amp is in need of service. Some tube amps do exhibit ghost notes but they're definitely not considered a feature. No offense to you but L6's stance on the ghost note is complete BS. They're based on the Vetta/xt/X3 modeling technology. Maybe they will release new modeling tech soon (It's been ages since they developed the Vetta algos) but the Spider models are not new. I don't even use those models so I can't comment. Some say that "ghost" notes are not present in the originals, some other say that they are but not so notorious. According to Line 6 itself that lower harmonic is modeled after some real amp behaviour so its not a bug but a feature. I would bet that a new Pod(x4?)is going to be released in 2010.ĭon't know what are the differences but for the record I like the sound of the X3 better than the xt and the sound of Podfarm plugin/standalone more than the X3. That said the new Spider IV/valve MKII amps use Line 6's latest "next gen" algorhithms and seem to be getting good reviews. This issue has really put me off on the POD in any form It sounds like an "unintelligent" harmonizer or even a ring mod. It very prominent on single notes but pretty much gets masked when playing chords. The AC30 and several of the marshalls and tweed fenders have a noticeable sub harmonic unrelated to the input signal. So it seems they dumb down the algorithms and use a lower sampling rate for pod farm.įWIW is no else bothered by the obvious aliasing artifacts on so many of the PODxt amp sims. There's no way a general purpose cpu can match it. The POD hardware has a dedicated sharc processor. The X3 also sounds different than the xt due to improved hardware and algorithms and is more close to the sound of Podfarm. Is not a big difference but is (to me at least) noticeable. The algorithms are a bit different between the xt hardware unit and the Podfarm standalone or plugin.

Is something acknowledged by Line 6 employees. Is not like the "My DAW sounds better than x" myth. This is especially helpful as there isn't any latency to deal with while recording. This way if something goes wrong with the original hardware tone (doesn't sit well), I'll flip over to the clean SPDIF track and throw POD Farm on it. But I also have the SPDIF out set to dry/clean which I record on a separate track as a backup. That it does, I almost always use the hardware itself to record the analog outs. Sometimes just blending with the recorded POD sound is good for me.Īnyhow, the Podfarm/POD combo is versatile and the USB souncard interface (PODX3) works well in the scenario above. Podfarm plugins are applied to the dry tracks, tweaked and automated. Record a multitrack split of guitar this way and obtain a dry signal as well as affected track for reference.

In my enthusiasm to make a point I forgot to add that the combo of POD h/w and plugins makes for many workflow possibilities.įor example getting a great (near) zero latency sound from (in my case PODX3) h/w to track with.
